Chapter 30

December 14, 2013

Over the following two weeks, Adam Marshall settled in the new routine of his life, reporting every morning to the office at eight o’clock sharp, and leaving around five in the afternoon.

For Arielle and Selena, they found tailing Adam at the office wasn’t as simple as they had hoped. With Selena on the thirty-first floor, Arielle on the thirty-second, and Michelle and Adam up on the thirty-fourth, the logistics complicated matters beyond their control.

Arielle never had business on the executive floor. And Selena could only justify a trip up there once a week. That did little to allow them insight into Adam and Michelle’s world.

Arielle had gradually brought home information to Felix with hopes of hacking into the WonderHome systems. One issue, however, was Arielle’s security clearance. She had access to most facets of the company, but not all. She could mainly deal with day-to-day operations that affected employees across the company. This would only help to an extent. What they really wanted was the access to read emails, private chat messages, and bank account information. Not even Arielle’s direct manager had access to these things, and it was her understanding that only the Chief Technology Officer had the coveted blanket clearance for all tech matters, with a handful of others having a variety of levels of access in between.

Felix spent many nights of those first two weeks of December trying to break ground, running into one obstacle after another. It neither fazed nor surprised him. This was a company worth just over four billion dollars, and they had obviously not spared a penny in the cybersecurity budget.

Arielle had even requested access to work from home, citing the need in case issues arrived in the middle of the night or over weekends. Besides, most others in her department had similar access. She was approved by her manager, but the final approval needed to make its way up to the CTO, who could take weeks, possibly months to get around to such a trivial request.

Felix believed having that VPN access at home would open more possibilities for him, but he would continue forward just the same until then.

Today, however, none of that mattered.

Felix had a Saturday night dinner date with Michelle Garrison, and all worries about hacking came to a screeching halt. He understood algorithms well enough to manipulate the dating app to finally show him Michelle after hours of mindless swiping. He had sent her the initial default message of interest when she popped up on his screen over Thanksgiving weekend. And by Sunday morning, Michelle replied with Hello there ;)

Seeing the message made him want to vomit. A winky face? From a middle-aged woman? Felix had dealt with enough emojis and what he considered childish games throughout college, to the point he gave up on even trying to date.

Most of the women he went to classes with were wise beyond their years. Strong, independent, brilliant, and often fierce. Yet, for some reason, in the name of
